The Sunshine Coast is a nature lovers paradise: old growth forests, diving, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, bird watching, horseback trail riding. If you’re looking to get closer to the outdoors, we have it all here in abundance.
Mountain Biking & Hiking Directly across the lake sits Mount Hallowell (part of the Caren mountain range) and Spipiyus Provincial Park. These mountains contains Canada’s oldest forest and perhaps the oldest closed canopy forest in the world. There is a fantastic hike to the peak of Mt Hallowell (featured in Jack Bryceland’s classic book 103 Hikes in Southwestern British Columbia) and BC’s last remaining fire lookout tower. The 360 degree view from this tower is breathtaking.
Another very popular hike is the trail to Skookumchuck rapids. With a 3 meter tide change over 200 billion gallons of water flow through these narrows creating a unique and spectacular natural phenomena.
If mountain biking is more your speed, the Coast has that covered too. Whether it’s downhill, single track cross country or technical, riders of all skill levels will find what they’re looking for. Much like Vancouver’s famous North Shore, many of the trails feature unparalleled natural beauty yet most are very seldom busy.
Trail Riding Malaspina Ranch, located just 10 minutes away, offers horseback trail riding throughout the year. Sturdy trail horses take riders of all levels to mountainous elevations of up to 1,800 feet. From these heights, equestrians enjoy spectacular views of the ocean, the Caren Mountain Range, Mount Daniel and Pender Harbour. Excursions last up to about 2 hours at a walk, trot or canter.
Golfing The Sunshine Coast boasts three excellent golf courses. The Pender Harbour Golf course is just 10 minutes away and offers 9 challenging holes & a driving range. You’ll find the licensed clubhouse restaurant is a great place to relax following your round.
Fishing Bring your fishing gear (or use ours) as Sakinaw has some great trout fishing. We’ll be happy to help you find some of the area’s smaller and harder to access spots as well. If ocean fishing is your preference there are several excellent charter companies operating on the Coast.
Diving Diving The crystal clear, unpolluted waters of the Sunshine Coast offer incredible visibility year round. Divers of all skill levels will find colourful and abundant marine life at a multitude of sites. From the HMCS Chaudiere Artificial Reef Site to high current drift diving at Skookumchuck Rapids to shore diving right at the mouth of Sakinaw Lake you’ll find this to be one of the best dive spots in the northwest.
